A low carb diet is not really effective for long term weight loss as it relies on causing ketosis of the liver to create the weight loss.
I have preferred more of a ’smart carb’ diet myself. If I’m going to eat a carb, I make sure it’s a healthy one that actually provides nutritional value and has some staying power so I stay fuller longer. For instance, if I want to have a sandwich, I select bread that has at least 4 grams of fiber per serving. If I want to have any kind of pasta dish, I do the same thing. It must have some kind of fiber in it. Same thing goes with cereal.
A piece of white bread really doesn’t do your body much good. It does have carbohydrates which you do use for energy, but, without the fiber it lacks staying power. If your changing your diet to lose weight, every calorie you put into your body has to count for something or you will never meet your nutritional needs. 16 grams of fiber per day is the recommended allotment. You pretty much have to eat whole grain pasta, whole grain bread, or whole grain cereal to be able to meet that. There are some vegetables too that provide fiber, but generally they are the higher calorie/ higher carb vegetables too.
Carbohydrates are your bodies first choice for energy usage. If your going to exercise, a low carb diet will leave you feeling tired and unmotivated.

I weighed 206 lbs. when I went on the Atkins Diet in late November of 1998. Within two years I had reached my goal weight of 145 pounds. I kept the weight off until I began I following the advice of a nutritionist at my doctor’s consulting group and gained back almost 20 pounds in one year by adding “healthy whole grains” to my diet. So I went back on low-carb, lost 15 pounds of it, and I’ve managed to keep my weight at approximately 150 pounds ever since by eating what I’d call a “moderately low-carb” diet.
I eat no refined sugars and no pre-prepared or boxed foods. I do all my own cooking using fresh meats, poultry and seafood, eggs, full-fat cheese and heavy cream. I eat lots of green veggies (fresh or frozen), a large salad almost every day, and berries or other low-carb fruits several times a week. I bake my own breads and cakes using low-carb ingredients, and eat them sparingly.
I’ve searched the Internet and my local library for low-carb recipes and cooking and baking hints, and developed a file of more than 2000 recipes, many of which I haven’t even been able to use yet. But my diet includes a lot of variety, and is never boring.
I believe that we are not all alike, and some people may thrive on different types of diet. But I’m glad I found low-carb, and I know it’s the best way of eating for me.

I have tried a low carb/low sugar diet through http://www.TheDietBug.info and they offer free meal plans and programs to get you started. I lost 20 pounds in about 2 weeks and i didn’t feel deprived or hungry. My favorite foods on the program were turkey roll ups and chicken pita pizza’s. If you are used to eating sugar you are allowed to use splenda or stevia to sweeten some of your foods. :)

Yeah I’m doing it now. I eat carbs in the morning only. I eat oatmeal or 2 pieces of whole wheat bread, or a bowl of raisin bran. After that I eat only tuna, vegetables, salads, cottage cheese, and fish. Sometimes I eat chicken. It always works for me. I only drink water.

my mom tried it. it does work, but you need to focus on cutting out ‘bad carbs’, not just all carbs. my mom said she also felt tired all the time..
